What does it mean to be created in the image and likeness of God.

August 30, 2018

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  Genesis 1:26

Sometimes we can hear something so often that we take what we have heard for granted. I find this is the case with the abovementioned scripture.  If you ask someone what it means to be created in the image and likeness of God, you will get a myriad of answers. Some will even admit they don’t have an answer.  Many believers have a problem answering the question as well.

If we cannot answer this question then we are robbing ourselves of walking in our full potential. Many have allowed religion and humanistic philosophy to define them. But the Bible is quite clear, on what God original design for mankind.  When God created man (mankind) He created man as a spirit, meaning man was created in the same class as God.

Man was not created as God’s equal. There is only one God. But mankind was created with the ability to fellowship with God because he is a spirit. The scripture states that God is Spirit, and those that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24) Before the fall of mankind, God would fellowship with his creation on a regular basis. (Genesis 3:8)

That fellowship was broken because of the fall of mankind. This was due to the fact man died spiritually and lost the ability to fellowship with God.(Genesis 3:7-8) This is what God meant when He said if you eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you will die. (Genesis 2:17) He was not talking about a physical death only, but a spiritual death. The spiritual death happened immediately, but the physical death would come years later.

When Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be “born again”, he meant a spiritual re-birth. Nicodemus thought he was talking about a physical re-birth. (John 3:3-8) When a person is reborn of the Spirit they receive the ability to communicate with God again. They have the ability to receive revelations from God like Adam did before the fall. The Scriptures record that Adam was able to name every creature on the earth. He did that without a formal education because he was able to download this information from God directly. (Genesis 2:18-20)

Jesus operated the same way while he was on the earth. Jesus told his followers on numerous occasions he only did what he saw his Father do and say. (John 5:19, 30, 14:10)  Jesus demonstrated what we are capable of if we adapted the same attitude he had.  The good news is Jesus has given us the ability to walk like he did. (John 14:12).

But in order for that to happen we have to renew our minds and think like Jesus thought. (Romans 12:1-3, Corinthians 2:16) God design for mankind has not changed. He still looking for those who are willing to take Him at His Word and humble themselves. To the degree you are willing to submit to Him is the degree He can manifest His power in your life. It’s that simple.
