One morning I was taking a yoga class. At the conclusion of the class the instructor was talking
about brokenness and was quoting a statement from a book she had read. The author was
talking about the importance of wholeness and achieving an elevated state of enlightenment.
He concluded that this world could only achieve wholeness if everyone had this mindset.
What the author had written was good, but he was making the assumption the fallen human
condition could be changed with self-effort alone, which is false. (Isaiah 64:6) There are many
people today that believe that they can achieve right standing with God, on their own. Many of
these people will be gravely disappointed when they finally realize that they have believed a lie;
for right standing with God comes through faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:21-24) Our righteous acts
are but filthy rags in the sight of God.
I thought to myself how many people subscribe to this mentality? This was the inspiration for this lesson today. I want to go back through the eons of time to reveal the origins of Lucifer, and how he became Satan. With this knowledge you will understand his strategy and be better positioned to discern his deception on mankind.
Lucifer was one of God’s Arch angels. His name means “light bearer” he was also called the “Bright Morning Star”. He was given this name for several reasons. One reasons was because of he was the angel of worship and was in the constant presence of God. Very few angels had this kind of access to the very throne of God. (Ezekiel 28:14) Another reason was because of his radiance, beauty, and intellect.
(Ezekiel 28:13) His intellect and wisdom far exceeded the other angels because of the position that he held.
One day, Lucifer became blinded by his slender and allowed pride to enter his heart. Because of his wisdom, beauty and prestige he deceived himself into putting his will over God’s will. He wanted to be like God. (Isaiah 14:14) Lucifer had forgotten that he was a created being. He did something no other angel dared to do. He exercised his ability to make a choice against God’s will.
Angels have the ability to make choices, but unlike human beings they don’t have the right to make choices. That is why there can be no redemption for Satan or any of the fallen angels that rebelled against God. They violated the law that God had established for all heavenly beings. This is the highest form of treason that exists in the heavens (Isaiah 14:11-15)
Lucifer then convinced one third of the angels to follow him and a battle ensued, however Lucifer now known as Satan (the deceiver) was expelled from heaven by the Arch Angel Michael and his forces.
(Luke 10:18) Still wanting to occupy the position of God, Satan saw the opportunity to be like God on the planet earth. All he had to do is to get Adam and his wife to give their allegiance to him.
God had created mankind in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-28), which meant they were little lower than Himself. (Psalms 8:5) Adam and his wife lived in a paradise, which was a replica of heaven.
They operated on this planet in the same manner which God operates the Cosmos. There was no strife or toil. No sickness, death or fear. Everything was in perfect harmony. God had wanted them to populate the earth and spread the Garden of Eden over the entire planet. (Genesis 1:28)
There was only one restriction that God had for Adam and his wife. They were not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:16-17) What was the significance of the tree of knowledge of good and evil? I pondered this thought and then I received some revelation on the subject. The tree represented self-will. God’s Truth was perfect, it was flawless. But self-will and determination is not.
Would Adam choose to trust God and totally rely on Him, or would he choose to determine right and wrong for himself, and in essence become his own god. If Adam chose the former then he would live in submission under the authority of God. However, if he chose the latter, he would choose the way of rebellion and fall under the rulership of Satan; who is the father of lies and deception.
Satan knew that if he wanted to rule this planet he needed to persuade either Adam or his wife to disobey God commandment concerning the tree of knowledge of good and evil. His plan finally worked when he told Adam’s wife they would be like God if they ate from the tree. Satan took advantage of their innocence and they fell for his deception.
As a result, they gave their lordship over this planet to Satan and he became the god of this planet. (2 Corinthians 4:4, Matthew 4:8-9, Ephesians 2:2, 1 John 5:19) Satan strategy had worked, or so the thought. He finally achieved what he wanted, to be like God. He would establish his kingdom on this earth. He would finally be worshipped both directly and indirectly.
Because Satan is a created being he can only pervert the principles and precepts of God, which makes them less than perfect. This in essence makes them fallible. There can never be perfection in his kingdom because it is based deception. At best it can only maintain a sense of perfection for a short period of time, and then it will crumble. If you look through the history of mankind on this planet, you will see this being played out time and time again. A society or person will reach their zenith and then decline. Without a stable or solid foundation the house will eventually fall no matter how pretty it looks on the outside.
Satan kingdom is based on selfish ambition, pride, and deceit. This was the cause of Lucifer’s downfall and because of his self-deception and blind ambition he continues to allow himself to believe that he will win his fight against the Almighty God and creator of the Cosmos. It is any wonder why so many people are blinded by his deception today. They are lured away with the thought; I don’t need God when I can be my own god. Little do they know that they are not their own god, they are only deceived into thinking they are. The truth is they are only following the philosophy of the god of this world.
